SUBJECT OPPORTUNITIES

Early Identification and Characterization of the Prodromal Phase of Thought Disorders in Invidiuals at Risk
FOR INDIVIDUALS AGES 12-35 WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED CHANGES IN THOUGHTS OR FEELINGS

Have you or someone you know experienced recent worrisome changes in thoughts and/or feelings? If so, maybe CAPPS can help.
CAPPS is the Staglin Music Festival Center for the Assessment and Prevention of Prodromal States and is located at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at UCLA.
We are looking for individuals ages 12-35 who are experiencing recent changes in their thoughts, feelings, and behavior, such as unusual thoughts, distorted or heightened perceptions, ideas of special identity or abilities, suspiciousness, or odd behavior. Other changes may include reduced concentration, reduced energy, depressed mood, sleep disturbance, withdrawal from family or friends, trouble with work or school, anxiety, or irritability.
Individuals who are experiencing difficulty functioning and who have a parent or sibling with a psychotic illness, such as schizophrenia, are also encouraged to contact us.
The procedures consist of an interview, neurocognitive testing, psychophysiological evaluation, magnetic resonance imaging brain scans, psychosocial evaluation, information processing, social cognition, and genetic testing, conducted at no cost, with evaluations repeating on several occasions over a period of up to 2 years or possibly longer. Psychological and Psychiatric treatment is available in our center to participants in the research study at no cost.
Please contact the staff of CAPPS at (310) 206-3466 for further information. A confidential phone screen will be conducted to determine initial eligibility. If you are under 18 years of age, please have your parents call.

Early Identification and Characterization of Adolescent-Onset Schizophrenia
FOR INDIVIDUALS AGES 12-17 WHO HAVE SCHIZOPHRENIA OR SCHIZOAFFECTIVE DISORDER

UCLA RESEARCH STUDY
Have you or someone you know recently been diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder? If so, maybe the Adolescent Psychosis Clinic can help.
The Adolescent Psychosis Clinic is located at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at UCLA.
We are looking for individuals between the ages of 12-17 who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder within the past 2 years.

The research procedures at APC consist of an interview, neurocognitive testing, psychophysiological evaluation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans, psychosocial evaluations, and genetic testing. Assessments are repeating on several occasions over a period of up to 2 years, at no cost to participants.
Psychiatric and psychological treatment is available in our center to participants in the research study at no cost.

Please contact the staff of the Adolescent Psychosis Clinic at (310) 206-3466 for further information. A confidential phone screen will be conducted to determine initial eligibility.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR HEALTHY CONTROL SUBJECTS

Early Identification and Characterization of the Prodromal Phase of Thought Disorders in Individuals at Risk- Control Subjects
AGES 12-35

UCLA RESEARCH STUDY
Parents - Do you have a healthy child between the ages of 12-17?

The Staglin Music Festival Center for the Assessment and Prevention of Prodromal States (CAPPS) at UCLA is looking for individuals between the ages of 12-35 to participate in a study on Memory, Attention, Learning, and Interpersonal/Emotional information processing.

What is the purpose of the study?
The purposes of this study are: 1) to develop a knowledge base for the prediction of future psychiatric diagnoses in adolescents and young adults who have symptoms that may signal the early stages of thought disorders; and 2) to understand how brain functioning changes over time in people who develop such symptoms as compared to those who do not.
.
Who can participate and what does the study involve?
We are looking for healthy volunteers between the ages of 12 and 35, who will participate in:

  • A Screening interview (2 hours) that will include questions related to personal life experiences and emotional well-being.
  • Assessments that will include: clinical interviews (2-3 hours), neurocognitive testing (3 hours), psychophysiological evaluation (6 hours), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans (2.5 hours), identifying numbers or letters that are presented on a computer (5 hours), blood draw, identifying emotions presented in a booklet and on videotape (2 hours), psychosocial assessments (3-4 hours). Shorter evaluations will occur four more times over the next 2 years.

Do participants receive compensation?
YES - Participants will receive $10 for each hour participated for approximately 10-29 hours at each assessment point.
If interested, please call the CAPPS program at (310) 206-3466. A confidential phone screen will be conducted to determine your child’s initial eligibility. (Individuals under 18 must have their parents call.)
